The song's first version was initially teased on SZA's Instagram Story on April 8, 2021, previewing the song's chorus while in a studio setting with individuals assumed to be the producers. The clip cuts off when the chorus ends, beginning to enter the verse.
On January 5, 2024, the tenth version of the song leaked in very low quality along with "Work It" and "27 Hours", the latter also being leaked in extremely low quality. Eventually, the high-quality version of the tenth variant of "Butterfly Garden" surfaced on July 8, 2024.
