"27 Hours" explores themes of low self-esteem and insecurity ("I highly doubt that anyone would put up with my shit"), as well as self-destruction and regret ("There's something about you that makes me hate myself"). In this song, based on the title, SZA has conflicts of separating from her lover ("It might take 27 hours just to cut you off") and emphasizes this throughout the chorus of the song multiple times. She has lost much of her sleep over this matter ("27 hours, no sleep at all") and starts questioning if everything really exists ("Are we really real at all?").

The song leaked in very low quality on January 5, 2024, along with "Work It" and "Butterfly Garden". A high-quality ten-second snippet has surfaced by a seller of unreleased songs.
On September 14, 2024, three versions of the song, including an acapella of what is believed to be the first demo track, surfaced; the final version of "27 Hours" allegedly originated on file sharing website DBREE. On the same day, an extended version of "Supermodel" leaked.
